Board Skills Analysis

Board Skills

A board skills analysis is used to evaluate the competencies and skills the board considers each existing director to possess as well as the competencies and skills it will need to address any gaps.

A skills analysis may be conducted as a standalone process or incorporated into an overall board review process. Effective Governance analyses director competencies in three areas:

  1. Behavioural: The attributes and competencies that enable individual directors to use their knowledge and skills, to function well as board members and to interact with key stakeholders.
  2. Governance: The essential governance knowledge all directors should possess, or be able to develop or enhance, if they are to be effective board members, e.g. financial literacy, strategic awareness, risk management orientation.
  3. Technical: The technical/professional skills and specialist knowledge an individual possesses that can assist with ongoing aspects of the board's role.

The benefits to the board for undertaking a skills analysis are:

  • Understanding of the board's current skills set
  • Determination of the skills and experience required
  • Training requirements for current directors
  • Understanding the required characteristics for future board nominations
